American artist P. Buckley Moss (Pat) was born and raised on Staten Island in New York in Growing up, great importance was given to academic achievement, and both Pat’s older sister and younger brother excelled in school. However, Pat did not, and she was considered hopeless. "Of all ills that one endures, hope is a cheap and universal cure." -Abraham Cowley. By late in the 1960s Moss began marketing her work. The P. Buckley Moss Museum opened in Waynesboro in 1989, and today galleries nationwide carry her works. Moss has been generous with her earnings and focused on child-related charities. In 1985 she helped famine-struck African countries through a Mennonite African relief fund.
Nancy Hanks Lincoln, born in Fauquier in , was the mother of President Abraham Lincoln. The P. Buckley Moss Museum opened in Waynesboro, Virginia in 1989. It has grown to attract roughly 45,000 visitors each year. In 1995, the P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children's Education was created to aid children with learning disabilities. In the marketing of her art, prints and posters, Moss is called "The People's Artist”.
